Music and Film

Film music is popular with our member orchestras. We have a comprehensive collection in our library worth exploring.

Gilbert Becaud

Gilbert Bécaud, born François Gilbert Léopold Silly on 24 October 1927 in Toulon, France, was a towering figure in 20th-century French chanson–renowned for his electrifying stage presence, earning him the nickname “Monsieur 100,000 Volts”.

Bécaud also acted in films and composed operas and film scores. His music was widely covered internationally, contributing to his global legacy.

We have the March from Babette Goes to War in our library, a 1959 French comedy film starring Brigitte Bardot in one of her most iconic roles–and notably, her first major film where she remained fully clothed throughout!

Women composers

We are exploring the many works in our catalogue by women composers and arrangers.

With over 100 women represented, there is plenty to discover.

Ethel Barns

Ethel Barns (1873–1948) was a remarkable British violinist, pianist, and composer whose career flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Though not widely remembered today, she was a prominent figure in London’s musical life between 1895 and 1928.

Born in London, Barns studied at the Royal Academy of Music from 1887, learning violin with Prosper Sainton and later Emile Sauret, composition with Ebenezer Prout, and piano with Frederick Westlake. She debuted as a violinist at The Crystal Palace in 1896 and toured both England and the United States, sometimes accompanying the famed soprano Adelina Patti. Barns was a founding member of the Society of Women Musicians in 1911 and later became a professor at the Royal Academy of Music
